Nice Try, Rev....But We Gotcha

Post by 16times » December 3rd, 2013, 2:48 pm

If you watch Al Sharpton' s show on MSNBC, you'll recognize that catchphrase. He uses it in segments when he shows a public figure (usually a Republican), trying to talk their way out of something stupid.

Reverend Al used to be a joke. He was fat and wore track suits and medallions, and managed to put himself into the middle of a lot of racially charged situations. But, in my opinion, in the last 15 years or so he's become a lot more respectable. He's changed his image, and is now one of the foremost voices on social issues and equality in the country.

Plus, he doesn't take himself too seriously, which is why I knew when I happened upon him in DC today that he'd probably be cool for a quick photo op.

I was walking from my office to a building across the mall to give a presentation, when I saw a mob of folks gathered around a tent. Plenty of TV cameras were in the middle, so I went over to investigate. I found Reverend Al interviewing civil rights icon John Lewis. I could get right up to him, just beyond the cameras, although he was drawing quite a crowd.

After he was done with Lewis, he walked away from us for a moment, but I called out to him and he looked at me. I asked for a photo op, and he held up his index finger as if to say, "Just a moment." That's it. I knew I was in. He'd take care of me.

After he came back over, he sought me out and posed up for a photo. My stupid camera phone screwed up the first time, so he gave me another chance.

Overall, a GREAT on the street meet.

Here's two I took as I walked up and he was interviewing John Lewis, and then me and the Rev.

You wanted to go out on the mall and avoid me ??? Niice try, Al...............but we gotcha !

Great photo! I'm with you on Al. I think he talks a lot of sense when he wants to - I like him. I've seen him join James Brown on stage twice. Once at the Central Park Summerstage where the crowd went wild for him. Once at Lincoln Center where Al got booed off stage. Which did not sit well with James. James yelled at the crowd for being rude "you boo a man of the Lord?! go boo yourself!!" Al came back on, did his lil rap got a few claps then got the hell out of there. James was in a bad mood for the rest of the night. ANYWAYS - cool score!!!

Nice job! I got the Rev back in '07, and he was totally cool. They were leaving the hippo, they pulled up out front & the driver got out to talk to 1 of the motorcyclist that was going to escort them around town to the different churches Al was appearing at. & Al's window was down, so I asked if I could get a photo. He said sure. I figured a shot with him sitting in the SUV was better then nothing, but he proceeded to get out. Then after taking the photo, said let's do 1 more, to make sure it came out.
