New Low at a convention for a guest? Kyler Murray @ CSA Show

Post by Nightshift » July 17th, 2019, 1:10 am

This past Sunday, I met up with DJKnightrida to attend CSA Show in VA. While waiting for photo ops, we heard that 2019 #1 NFL Draft Pick/Arizona Cardinals QB Kyler Murray was called for his turn in the photo booth. There was about 25/30 people for him and some looked like they had traveled just to meet him.

About a minute after calling for his photo op time, their was another announcement that Kyler Murray photo ops were cancelled and you could get a refund for them. Apparently he didn't want to do photos. CSA tried to rectify the situation, you got your refund and a free inscription if you bought his autograph. I have never seen anything like this ever in a paid setting. Cancelling is one thing, but to show up and because you are having a bad day/mad. Even little kids were trying to get a photo with him at his signing table and no dice. Screwing over your fan base, only hurts yourself. Everyone there was pretty nice to my knowledge except for this guy.

Yet again, goes to show you how in the sick world of combos, even a guarantee isn't a guarantee. Wow just wow.

A lot of blame should go to the player(s) but I also place blame on the promoters. CSA has been around many years with two different owners and over the last decade they have gotten so big with so many athletes that there are bound to be issues especially if they may not be clarifying things in advance with a player and just going through the agent.

When I first went to CSA shows in the early 2000s, they had maybe 20-25 players signing. For the most part it would be one major star and everyone else was maybe B level with a few lower tier players at a $10-12 dollar level (shocking, right?). Table photos ops were almost always allowed, sometimes with players actually standing up or coming from behind the table. It was just a different atmosphere.

About 10 years ago everything changed for the worse. The new owners try to keep the more personable feel to their customer service but it's difficult with many new players being scheduled along with AAA level names of former stars and having sometimes two to three times the amount of players than they had 15-20 years ago.

Another bad thing is the people that work next to the athletes. I am not sure if they are paid or volunteer. The new CSA owners let go of a lot of the original CSA staff members but even before that a number of the original staff had been gone. I was friends with one of the staff members who just stopped collecting and going to shows. He was a major fan and there was almost a symbiotic relationship between the players and the staff members at the tables. Now, and for the last 10 years, the staff at the tables are more like agents or if they are not want to believe in their minds they are agents protecting the clients' interest. In 2000 you could get a much more personal experience with the players while now it is almost completely rush, rush, rush.

I understand CSA is a business and the demand for a large amount of autograph signers and bigger names and newer names commands their current business model. But as a fan it hurts a little to see how badly things have changed and I would hope if I were a big business owner that I never let things change to such a point that my business lost what made it so special in the beginnings. CSA at one point was known to collectors at the special, unique show very much unlike many sports conventions of the times.

Guy just sounds like a loser, as he will be in the NFL.

I want to add, I'm not a sports fan but I would think that anyone who travels just for Kyler Murray needs to have their head examined. He isn't exactly A list.

If you are local then you lost nothing. If you traveled I would hope you traveled for many others reasons besides him. Still upsetting for fans and low for him to do that. But since all ops were refunded I would hope no one got hurt by this. That's like me going to Rhode Island and one mid or lower guest decided not to do ops. I still have my main reason for going (Chevy Chase) plus other names.

Man, for some of the names I have seen you guys travel for, interesting to see you think people need to have their heads examined for traveling for the number 1 pick in the NFL draft as well as the number 9 overall pick in the MLB draft . If the guy goes on to be a superstar either football or baseball, obviously this would have been a great time to meet him. Personally, I wouldn’t have gone to any trouble but I can see why football fans or even baseball fans would have.

Correct, the fool is not a sports fan, and hence shouldn't be commenting. Had it been anyone he wanted and photo ops were refused, he'd be crying in the car, chasing to the airport, etc.

Class is the very last person on this board who should be commenting on reasons why someone "needs to have their head examined".

This actually reminds me of the Bushwhacker Luke thread where he didn't know his signing was at a Wal Mart. These agents don't communicate effectively with their talents and Murray's agent probably never communicated what was required, said it was an autograph signing and the kid being a jerk didn't want to participate. Yes, Murray's fault ultimately but if the agents can't or won't or don't know to communicate with their clients, disappointment will happen.

Of the guy could just be a douche bag... that’s just as possible. Probably catered to and ass kissed his whole sports career.

The agents are not to blame. He's supposed to be a PROFESSIONAL athlete. From reading quite a few FB posts, every other rookie was fine and very enthusiastic. This guy is just a dick. He's also tiny. Have fun in Arizona getting used as a soccer ball.

You have to also think, people probably flip burgers for 2-4 months to make what he would have just standing there for less than an hour TAKING PICTURES!

More nonsense. Why insult people who work for a living?

How nonsense? Even if what I said was a *little* bit exaggerated the essence of my point remains.

You're fixated on money spent. Most sports collectors are not spending their life savings, or being forced to eat wafers and porridge all week.
