Expo Lucha convention took a major loss

Post by ICW » September 6th, 2018, 5:42 pm

From the newest Observer:
There was an Expo Lucha convention over the weekend in Las Vegas. Like with Starrcast, there were a lot of people who flew in and spent a ton of money on merchandise. Masks were selling like hot cakes of the big stars. But this was a major financial loser.

There was unhappiness that a lot of the wrestlers there didn’t promote the event on social media. It was noted to us how Penta promoted All In hard but not this convention. It was also noted that the modern stars like Psycho Clown had long lines but there was little interest in many of the legends like Pirata Morgan or Super Muneco.

There were four shows, with the first one on 8/31 doing about 180 fans, the big show with Rey Mysterio Jr. & Penta 0M & Rey Fenix over Juventud Guerrera & Psicosis & Super Crazy did 500 fans, the 9/1 afternoon show did 350 fans and the 9/1 evening show headlined by L.A. Park & Psycho Clown vs. El Texano Jr. & El Hijo del Fantasma did 650 fans.

Park refused to do his scheduled meet and greet. He and his son walked about over an argument with the promoters wanting to be paid extra and the promotion said they would never work with him again.

Solomon Grundy, a star in the 80s and early 90s, made his first Lucha appearance in 23 years. He had a gastric bypass surgery to lose weight and many of the wrestlers from his era didn’t recognize him due to the weight loss. Some were in tears seeing him and seeing how good he looked. Other legends included Tinieblas Jr.,Alushe, Fantasma (as in the father), Ultimo Dragon, Mano Negra, Cobarde, Fuerza Guerrera, Negro Navarro, Solar, Mesias, Mascarita Dorada, Angel Blanco Jr., Kendo as well as LAX from TNA, Rey Horus, Daga and others.

Ortiz from LAX’s just had a son and right after he was born took the next flight out to fulfill his commitment. Others there included Chris Adonis (Masters), Moose, Austin Theory, Shane Helms, Eddie Edwards, John Morrison, Taya and Cheerleader Melissa among others. Cobarde, who is 71, jumped off the top rope to the floor. Konnan, Helms, Juventud Guerrera, Morrison and Taya did a stand-up routine telling funny stories about the business at the Nerd Lounge in Las Vegas. The first show was headlined by Ultimo Dragon winning the Northern California-based Pro Wrestling Revolution title from El Hijo de Trump. Jungle Boy, who is Luke Perry’s son, worked on that show. The 8/31 night show had a lot of names including LAX over Tom Lawlor & Daga as well as the main event with Mysterio

Many of the smarks that would have normally considered flying out for this show were all in Chicago for All In/Starrcast weekend, so it was likely a victim of poor timing.

Based on the photos I’ve seen it looked like a fun time. I think this show was announced a bit before All In/Starrcast & I’m sure Chicago won the weekend for wrestling.
